1. Measure what you can
Rough dimensions of the area — length and width of a driveway, the size of a section of yard, the run of a fence line — help a contractor size up the job before they even see it in person. You do not need to be exact, but "about 40 square metres" is far more useful than "medium sized".
2. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves
Decide in advance what you actually need versus what you would like if the budget allows. Being upfront about this in your request means contractors can quote a realistic core job, with options, rather than guessing at your priorities.
3. Take a few photos
A handful of photos of the site — especially anything unusual like a slope, tight access, or existing structures — lets a contractor scope the job more accurately without a separate visit just to see what you are describing.
4. Be honest about budget and timeframe
A rough budget range and timeframe are not commitments, they are context. Sharing them helps a contractor tailor a quote to what is realistic, instead of quoting a version of the job that does not match what you actually want to spend or when you need it done.
5. Note anything about access
Narrow side gates, steep driveways, no off-street parking, or shared walls with a neighbour can all affect how a job is priced and scheduled. Mentioning these upfront avoids a quote having to be revised once a contractor sees the site.
