Retaining wall cost guide: what drives the price per metre

A retaining wall quote can look wildly different from one contractor to the next, mostly because the wall itself can mean very different things depending on the site.

Height is the biggest factor, by far

A low garden-edging wall under about 600mm is a straightforward job. Once a wall gets taller, the engineering behind it changes — it needs to hold back significantly more soil pressure, which usually means proper footings, drainage behind the wall, and sometimes an engineer's design and council approval. The cost per square metre of wall face climbs sharply with height, not in a straight line.

Drainage is not optional

A retaining wall without proper drainage behind it is a wall waiting to fail — trapped water builds up pressure that timber, concrete or block walls are not designed to resist. Agricultural pipe, gravel backfill and a way for water to escape all add cost, but skipping them is a false saving.

Materials

Timber sleepers are usually the cheapest option for lower walls but have the shortest lifespan. Concrete sleepers and segmental block systems cost more but last longer and need less maintenance. Natural stone sits at the premium end, priced on both material and the skill needed to lay it well.

Access and site conditions

Getting materials and, if needed, machinery to the wall location matters. A wall in an easily accessed front yard costs less to build than the same wall down a narrow side access or on a steep slope where everything has to be moved by hand.

Getting it right

Because engineering requirements kick in at a certain height (and vary by council), a retaining wall is one job where it is worth being upfront with contractors about the height and what the wall needs to hold back. Get a few quotes and ask each one directly whether the height requires engineering — a contractor who has not considered it is a warning sign.
